Tears...

As I was leaving the high desert of Nevada, out on the "Loneliest Road in America", I was contemplating my next stop that would lead me back to the Pacific Northwest. I pulled open the All Trails app, my go-to for finding paved paths to ride my bike, and found a trail right in the path of my drive. It was the Canyon Rim Trail in Twin Falls, ID. From the photos I found online of the ride and of Shoshone Falls, I immediately knew this was my next ride, it looked absolutely inspiring - and boy was I not wrong! To date this has to be one of my top 3 rides for the trail and the views.

Nestled in the heart of Twin Falls, Idaho, the Canyon Rim Trail offers cyclists a unique opportunity to experience the breathtaking beauty of the Snake River Canyon. Beginning at the iconic Shoshone Falls, this trail meanders along the rim of the canyon, providing stunning views, diverse terrain, and a memorable ride for cyclists of all skill levels. The trail is 7 miles, so a round trip of 14. In this blog post, I’ll take you through the entire journey, highlighting key landmarks, tips for the ride, and photos of the natural beauty that makes this trail a must-visit for any biking enthusiast.

Starting Point: Shoshone Falls Park

Often referred to as the "Niagara of the West," Shoshone Falls is an awe-inspiring sight and a perfect starting point for the Canyon Rim Trail. Standing at 212 feet, Shoshone Falls is actually higher than Niagara Falls and offers a majestic view with its powerful cascades, especially during the spring and early summer when the snowmelt feeds the Snake River.

Before setting off on your ride, take some time to explore the Shoshone Falls Park. There are several viewpoints and picnic areas where you can enjoy the roaring falls and perhaps snap a few photos. The park also has ample parking and restrooms, making it a convenient spot to gear up for your journey. There is an entry fee of $5 to visit the park, but when I arrived at 8:00 am on a Tuesday morning the fee station was closed, but the park open, so prepare accordingly.

The Trail Begins

From Shoshone Falls, the Canyon Rim Trail heads west, hugging the edge of the canyon and providing cyclists with continuous views of the rugged cliffs and the Snake River below. The trail is well-paved, making it accessible for both casual riders and those looking for a more intense workout.

As you pedal away from the falls, the trail takes you through a series of scenic overlooks and interpretive signs that offer insight into the geological history and ecology of the canyon. The first mile has the most elevation gain, but after that the trail is relatively flat, allowing you to ease into the ride and fully appreciate the panoramic views.

Key Landmarks Along the Trail

1. Evel Knievel Jump Site

About three miles into your ride, you’ll come across the site where Evel Knievel attempted his famous jump across the Snake River Canyon in 1974. The site is marked by a plaque and offers a great vantage point to reflect on the daredevil’s audacious stunt. It’s a short detour from the main trail and well worth the visit for a bit of local history.

2. Twin Falls Visitor Center

Continuing west, you’ll soon reach the Twin Falls Visitor Center. This is a great spot to take a break, refill your water bottles, and learn more about the area’s attractions. The center is situated near the Perrine Bridge, which spans the canyon and is a popular spot for BASE jumping. If you’re lucky, you might catch a glimpse of thrill-seekers leaping from the bridge.

3. Perrine Coulee Falls

Just past the visitor center, the trail leads you to Perrine Coulee Falls. This hidden gem is a lesser-known waterfall that flows year-round. The falls cascade over the canyon rim, creating a tranquil and picturesque scene. A short side trail takes you closer to the falls, where you can feel the cool mist and enjoy the serene environment.

Embrace the Challenge: Elevation Changes and Terrain

The Canyon Rim Trail offers a mix of flat sections and gentle inclines, making it suitable for various levels of fitness. However, there are a few spots where the trail descends into the canyon slightly before climbing back up. These elevation changes add a bit of challenge to the ride, but the stunning views at the top make every climb worthwhile. The most notable elevation change is at the very beginning of your ride from Shoshone Park where you will see an elevation gain of 300 feet in the first mile, some sections fairly steep, but nothing not manageable.  After that the ride is mostly flat with a few minor elevation changes. Unless you decide to venture down to the canyon floor into Centennial Waterfront Park.

Reaching Centennial Waterfront Park

If you're feeling extra adventurous you can leave the Canyon Rim Trail and descend down to Centennial Waterfront Park.  But, beware that you will be on a road with other cars and the climb back out is very steep and winding. This beautiful park is a hub for outdoor activities and offers plenty of amenities for a well-deserved rest. Here, you can rent kayaks or paddleboards to explore the Snake River up close, go on hikes, or simply relax by the water and enjoy a picnic.

The park is often bustling with families, anglers, and fellow outdoor enthusiasts, creating a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere. I drove down after my out and back ride on the Canyon Rim Trail. If I had more time to spend in the area, I would definitely have taken advantage of all that the park has to offer.

Tips for a Successful Ride

1. Prepare Adequately: Ensure your bike is in good working condition before setting off. Check your brakes, tires, and gears to avoid any mechanical issues on the trail. There are also bike pump stations scattered along the trail for your use.

2. Stay Hydrated and Fueled: Bring plenty of water and snacks to keep your energy levels up. There are water fountains and restrooms along the trail, but it’s always good to have your own supplies.

3. Wear Appropriate Gear: A good helmet, sunglasses, and sunscreen are essential. The sun can be intense, especially during the summer months. You are exposed on the entirety of the trail, there is no shade.

4.Take Your Time: The beauty of the Canyon Rim Trail is in its scenic views and serene atmosphere. Don’t rush through it. Take breaks, enjoy the overlooks, and immerse yourself in the experience. I went the end of May, during the middle of the week, early morning and there were only a handful of other cyclists and walkers, it was ideal conditions, although VERY windy, so be sure to check the weather before heading out.

5. Respect the Environment: Stay on the designated trail to protect the natural habitat. Dispose of any trash properly and be mindful of wildlife.
